July 5, 1929: A young Cortland man drowns after saving his girl companion on Lake Milton. Alvie Weckbacher, 23, was riding in a canoe with Edith Campbell, 19, when it capsized. Weckbacher kept Miss Campbell afloat until a speed boat arrived to rescue her, but then went under.
Carmine Toto, 41, of Struthers is killed almost instantly when a large bomb he ignited to celebrate the Fourth of July exploded.
It costs more to draw a pitcher of water, make a keg of beer or sprinkle a lawn in Youngstown than almost any other city in the country. At $3 for the first 1,000 cubic feet of water, Youngstown's rates are three times that of Cleveland.
