After numerous movie adaptations of Jane Austen's classic novels such as "Pride and Prejudice" and "Emma," the author herself will get the big-screen treatment.
Columbia Pictures will produce the Ecosse Films project "Becoming Jane" about the beloved 19th-century writer, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The biopic will center on her life around the tender age of 20, when she fell in love with a young Irish lawyer and before she became known as a novelist during England's Regency era.
Based on a screenplay by Kevin Hood, the project is out to directors and is scheduled to begin production in 2005.
Other adaptations
Austen's novels -- which haven't been out of print since their initial publication -- are known for their sharp dialogue, cutting social observations and romances between flawed, yet essentially good people. All of her books have been adapted for either film or television. A couple of the most recent adaptations include 1999's "Mansfield Park" and 1996's "Emma" starring Gwyneth Paltrow as the titular heroine.
Her most celebrated work is "Pride and Prejudice," which has enjoyed numerous incarnations and is guaranteed to see at least two more. "Bend It Like Beckham" director Gurinder Chadha is currently wrapping a Bollywood version of the story called "Bride and Prejudice," which will open in limited release at the end of the year.
A more traditional version begins shooting in London soon and stars "Pirates of the Caribbean's" Keira Knightley.
