Group helps out troops
PITTSBURGH (AP) -- A group that has shipped soldiers much-needed T-shirts and socks that absorb sweat and make the Iraqi heat more bearable plans to form a nonprofit group that would pool the efforts of people across the state or country to offer more soldiers the same comforts.
The group, Operation Troop Appreciation, began in March when 29-year-old Kristen Holloway heard that a friend's brother was being sent to Iraq along with 116 other members of the 759th Military Police Company of the Pennsylvania National Guard.
"We are all at war, but here in America we're living the same as we did before 9/11," said Holloway. "I felt I wasn't doing enough -- as a nation we're not doing enough -- to acknowledge the sacrifice of our troops."
Holloway collected money from relatives and friends from the University of Pittsburgh's business school to buy and send Under Armor T-shirts and socks to the entire battalion to help them manage the 120-degree Iraqi summer.
The group has also sent similar care packages to other Pennsylvania National Guard Units and plans to send packages to a West Virginia Army National Guard Unit.
The group has asked the Internal Revenue Service for tax-exempt status, which organizers said could be granted as soon as the end of the year.
