Tent Troupe at St. John
CHAMPION -- St. John Lutheran Church, 5734 Mahoning Ave., is bringing in the Tent Troupe for two performances July 14. The performance group will present a children's matinee "Animal Tales" at 2 p.m. and a family performance of "Everything I ever wanted to know I learned in Kindergarten" at 7 p.m. in a large circus tent set up at the church. The Tent Troupe, consisting of about 25 youth from St. Luke Lutheran Church in Silver Spring, Md., travels all summer performing popular plays. The troupe's day typically begins at 5:30 a.m. as they set up the tents, the stage, lights and props and ends about midnight. St John is near the intersection of Routes 45 and 305. Church hosts congress
YOUNGSTOWN -- The 66th District Congress will convene from Monday to July 11 at the Triumph Church of the New Age at 390 Chicago Ave. Services will be at 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. daily. The Women's Session will meet at 10 a.m. Monday and Tuesday with District Mother Susie Washington of Newark N.J., presiding. Bishop Mark A. Peachey of Newark, N.J., will preside over the General Session. Rev. William Harris of Toledo will be the guest speaker at the Interfaith Service at 8 p.m. Friday, and Regina Williams of Brooklyn, N.Y. will supervise Saturday's Youth Day.

Grant-writing help
BOARDMAN -- "Grant Writing for Faith-Based Organizations" will be presented in two workshops scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday and Friday at Boardman Park. The Center to Advance Christian Compassion, a program affiliated with The Way Station Inc. of Columbiana, is the sponsor. Thursday's worskshop provides tools for churches and other nonprofit organizations to begin exploring funding sources and strategies. Friday's program will help participants evaluate grant proposals with attention to budgeting and program evaluation. Melinda Holsopple, co-executive director of The Way Station, will teach the workshops. She has more than 15 years of development and grant-writing experience and is an adjunct professor at Kent State University. Appreciation service
YOUNGSTOWN -- Holy Trinity Baptist Church of 505 Parkcliffe Ave., will have an appreciation service at 4 p.m. July 11 for their pastor, Rev. Lewis W. Macklin II and his family in recognition of their seventh year of ministry. Special guests will be Pastor David L. Herron Sr. and the congregation of Monument of Faith Church of God in Christ in Warren. The Rev. Mr. Macklin is married to the former Dorothy L. Felder, and they have four children.
hLocal couple on album
WARREN -- The work of a local couple will be featured on the album "Songs of Praise," which was recently released by Amerecord. The album, which features songs written by composers and lyricists from across the country, includes "I Will Say Yes" by Nelson and Carrie Blakely of Warren.
