Programs about fire safety and nature will be highlighted, and a hike, several children's programs and a T-shirt design event also will be on tap this weekend and next at McConnell's Mill and Moraine state parks, near Portersville, Pa. Smokey Bear: Someone dressed as the national symbol of fire prevention and safety will be at the Kildoo picnic area and the Old Mill at 1 p.m. today to shake hands, and will be accompanied by the Slippery Rock Volunteer Fire Department. 17-Year Locusts: A naturalist will be available at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Kildoo picnic area to discuss the insect invasion going on in the Midwest, as well as why locusts come out once every 17 years.Name That Track: People are invited to the Kildoo picnic area from 2 to 3 p.m. next Sunday to take part in identifying various tracks left behind and to see what animals made them.Wings of Flight, Bats: This free, three-day camp, part of the Environmental Discovery Day Camp and Youth Environmental Learning Series, is for children ages 6 to 8. They will have an opportunity to explore the world of this flying mammal and find out more about bats. The program is from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday in the Mill Courtyard. The park also offers two, half-hour corn-grinding demonstrations beginning at 1 and 3 p.m., as well as two, 45-minute Historic Grist Mill Tours that take participants into the history of how grain was transformed into flour at the park. The tours start at 2 and 4 p.m., and both events are on Saturdays and Sundays at the Old Mill.
