MiniPage activities meet many state and national educational standards. This week's standards: Students understand nutrition and wellness practices that enhance individual and family well-being. (Family and Consumer Science)
Activities:
1. Draw a picnic table with your favorite summer foods. Write a story about a summer party with your friends and family members.
2. Use the food ads from the newspaper to create a summer picnic menu that is different from the traditional foods shown in today's MiniPage. Be sure to include a meat, vegetable, fruit, bread and dessert.
3. Make a list of the summer foods in today's MiniPage. Now interview family members and friends to see which foods they like. Ask each person to select his or her two favorite foods. Make a chart showing the number of votes each food received. Which are your two favorite foods? Why?
4. Which summer foods originally came from these world areas: (a) the Americas, (b) Africa, (c) Europe, (d) the British Isles, and (d) Asia?
5. Use resource books and the Internet to learn more about a summer food you like, but one that is not shown in today's MiniPage. Use these questions to guide your research: Where did this summer food come from originally? When did it become popular? How popular is it in different countries?
