Sex offender arrested
CLEVELAND -- A registered sex offender from Cleveland, who was formerly of Girard, was arrested and jailed late Friday by U.S. Marshals in Muncie, Ind. Marvin Chandler, 33, who had been on parole from the Ohio prison system for gross sexual imposition upon a minor, was arrested at the home of a female acquaintance, according to Dean Michael, the U.S. Marshals Service fugitive task force coordinator for northern Ohio. Chandler was being supervised by Ohio Adult Parole Authority agents in Youngstown, and he violated his parole by leaving Cleveland three weeks ago, Michael said. As a registered sex offender, Chandler can't legally change his address without notifying law enforcement authorities, Michael explained. Chandler will be returned to Ohio for a parole violation hearing, Michael said.
Cleanup helpers needed
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown Environmental Studies Society at Youngstown State University seeks volunteers to participate in a July 17 community cleanup and beautification on Wick and Logan Avenues.
Volunteers are asked to spend one or two hours to prune trees, use a weed cutter and perform other tasks. Equipment is provided. Workers will meet at 8 a.m. at the new Time Warner building on Wick Avenue, just north of Ursuline High School.
Camp registration
CANFIELD -- The Mahoning County 4-H program will be offering a day camp for children ages 5-8 at Mill Creek MetroParks Educational Farm Aug. 4-7. The park is located on state Route 46 across from the fairgrounds.
The camp, titled "Under the Big Top," will include crafts, games and educational activities. Registration in 4-H is not required, but all 5-years olds must have completed kindergarten. The camp costs nothing, but a $10 deposit is required to hold a spot at registration.
Registration will be accepted until July 16. For more information, call (330) 533-5538.
Arsonist sought
GREENVILLE -- Due to a recent rash of suspected arsons, the police and fire departments are asking owners and neighbors of vacant buildings in the borough to stay alert for suspicious activity. Owners are asked to make sure their buildings are secured. Any suspicious activity, no matter how minor, needs to be reported by dialing 911, the departments said.
The departments are following every lead to catch the arsonist before any firefighters or citizens are injured. At the most recent suspicious fire on Shenango Street, two Greenville firefighters narrowly escaped injury as they almost fell through a hole burned in the second floor, firefighters said.
Police and fire crews will be increasing patrols as staffing allows.
