Woman receives probation for felonious assault
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 36-year-old Republic Avenue woman was placed on three-years' probation Wednesday in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court for firing a gunshot that wounded a man who'd robbed her.
Sheela Robinson had pleaded guilty in April to one count of felonious assault and could have been sentenced to up to eight years in prison.
Authorities said the victim, Jermaine McKinney, stole some $3,000 cash and some jewelry from Robinson's home in August 2003. Robinson, who knew McKinney, went out looking for him.
She took a gun, intending to use it to force him to go with her to the police station.
When Robinson found McKinney on Elm Street, an argument ensued and she inadvertently fired a shot onto the ground, said defense attorney Anthony P. Meranto. The bullet ricocheted off the pavement and grazed McKinney's ankle, which resulted in the charge.
As part of her probation, Robinson was ordered by Judge R. Scott Krichbaum to complete counseling for stress and anger management.
