U.S. OPEN CUP SOCCER Paule's penalty kick goal gives Crew 2-1 victory
COLUMBUS (AP) -- Ross Paule scored on a penalty kick in extra time to give the Columbus Crew a 2-1 win Wednesday night over the A-League's Syracuse Salty Dogs in the U.S. Open Cup.
The Crew advances to the round of 16 in the single-elimination tournament.
Syracuse defender Rene Rivas-Squella fouled Kyle Martino inside the penalty area, setting up Paule's goal.
All the scoring came in the final 20 minutes.
Columbus forward Erick Scott slotted a pass to Edson Buddle inside the penalty area in the 70th minute, allowing Buddle to score from nine yards.
Syracuse's Scott Schweitzer, a second-half substitution, tied it 1-all with a shot from 21 yards in the 81st minute.
The Crew was unable to capitalize on first-half scoring chances from Paule and Manny Lagos.
Salty Dogs goalkeeper Paul Nagy denied Paule's indirect free kick in the fourth minute with a diving save that knocked the ball out of play.
A shot from Lagos in the 33rd minute cleared the Syracuse defense but sailed right of the goal.
The Salty Dogs managed only two shots in the first half, one a drive from 22 yards by midfielder David Lara that went just over the crossbar.
Syracuse forward Kupono Low broke through the Columbus defense in the 64th minute, but his shot from 14 yards went high.
The U.S. Open Cup is the oldest annual team sports tournament in the country.
