Fraud investigation begins
YOUNGSTOWN -- A former employee of the Youngstown Metropolitan Housing Authority is the subject of a fraud investigation, police said. Authorities said the woman, who resigned as a result of the investigation without admitting wrongdoing, created bogus housing assistance accounts and used defunct account information to make payment checks to her acquaintances. The criminal activity began as early as December 2003 and continued until last month, when the discovery was made, reports show. The case, first investigated internally at YMHA, is in the hands of detectives.

Shooting charges dropped
NILES -- Charges against a Youngstown man accused of firing several shots into a crowd after a rap concert earlier this year were dismissed at the request of the city prosecutor. Justin Young, 21, of Brentwood Avenue appeared Wednesday in Niles Municipal Court for a preliminary hearing on charges of carrying a concealed weapon and felonious assault. Initial police records said Young was identified as the man who was sitting in a car and who fired several shots during a melee in the Eastwood Mall complex parking lot after an April 9 rap concert. But Prosecutor Bruce Bennett asked that the case be dismissed after witnesses -- including the man who was shot -- said Young was not the man who pulled the trigger.
