SANDLOT BASEBALL Wharmby clinches top seed in Class B playoffs on 2-1 win

STRUTHERS -- Mike Holmes made two first-inning runs stand up as Wharmby Sports clinched the top seed for the Class B baseball playoffs with a 2-1 win over Astro Wednesday at Cene park.
Jessie Alfreno opened the game with a triple, and after one out, Dustin Kulka doubled him home. A single by Pat Oman moved Kulka to third, where he scored on a sacrifice fly by Billy Herman.
Wharmby (21-5) threatened in five of the next six innings but was shut out by Astro pitcher Joe Irwin, who went 62/3 innings with six strikeouts. Wharmby stranded 12 men on base.
Astro (19-7) finally got on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning when a sacrifice fly by Bill Christian scored Frank Turocy, who had singled to start the frame.
Holmes went the distance for the win, his sixth of the year with no defeats. He did not walk a man and had seven strikeouts.
Alfreno had three hits, while Kulka added two more for the winners. Dan Bertolini and Turocy had two hits each for Astro.
Livi Steel 4, Mink Financial 3
Rick Banna's double in the top of the seventh inning drove home the winning run as Livi Steel defeated Mink Financial.
Livi improves to 20-6 and clinches second place for the playoffs. Mink falls to 16-10 and is in fifth place, one game behind Koch/Line Drive for the final playoff spot.
Brian Youchak and Steve Orlosky had two hits each for Livi, which got a complete-game win from Shawn Carr (3-1). Carr had three strikeouts.
Mike Brown had three hits while Dave Piersante added a triple and a single for Mink. Jay Yorty suffered the loss to fall to 2-3. He had four strikeouts.
Koch Construction/Line Drive 11, Dave Sugar Excavating 1
Joe Koch Construction/Line Drive Academy used a 13-hit attack to defeat Dave Sugar Excavating to take over sole possession of fourth place at 17-9.
Dom Modarelli, Aaron Boris, Matt Madrid and Nate Tacsik had two hits each; both of Boris' hits were triples.
Ryan McCallister allowed just three hits and one earned run to improve to 5-1 on the mound. He had three strikeouts.
Joel Imler (2-1) suffered the loss for Sugar (8-18).
Youngstown Propane 8, Youngstown Express 7
Propane pushed across the winning run in the sixth inning to edge Express.
Mike Evans, Craig Osborne, Rob Sullivan and Ron Palowitz each had two hits for Propane (9-17) while Aaron Rudibaugh and John Burnich had three hits apiece for Express (2-24).
Justin Herberger got the win in relief. Pat Smith suffered the loss.
Roth Bros. 12, Rondinelli Tuxedo 7
Julian Carabella had three hits as Roth Brothers used a 10-run fourth inning to defeat Rondinelli.
Ben Mackall and John Virostko doubled for the Roth (5-21) team that trailed 3-1 after three innings.
Phil Williamson doubled for Rondinelli (13-13).
