MAHONING COUNTY Man hurt, charged in chase
Police said the man ran after they found him with possible drug items.
AUSTINTOWN -- A New Springfield man who cut his head during a chase with police was in serious condition at St. Elizabeth Health Center this morning.
Police said they are not sure how Dwayne Scott, 38, of Unity Road cut his head, but they said it happened as he ran from officers Wednesday morning.
Police charged Scott with obstructing official business, resisting arrest, possession of drugs, possession of drug abuse instruments and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Officers were called to a Lake Road home about 9:30 a.m. by a woman who said Scott was at the home and refused to leave. She said that Scott had asked her for a ride from a mutual friend's house about 4 a.m. and that he told her another person would pick him up at the Lake Road home.
The second ride never arrived at the Lake Road home, however, the woman said.
The chase
Reports state that officers found Scott rocking back and forth on a bed in the Lake Road home. He told them his name was Duane Thompson, but he didn't have any identification.
Police told Scott that if he left the home they would give him a ride to the corner of Meridian Road and Mahoning Avenue.
Once outside the home, police searched a bag Scott was carrying and found two syringes and a burned spoon, which can be a tool for heroin use, officers said.
An officer took Scott by the arm to try and arrest him, but he broke free and ran, reports state. Police later found and arrested Scott, who had cut his head, behind a home on Nassau Court. They called an ambulance to take him to the hospital.
Police said once they were at the hospital they searched Scott's bag again and found a suspected crack pipe and wax packages typically used to hold heroin. Scott told police he had used heroin and crack that morning, reports state.
