AROUND THE HORN Wednesday's other games
AMERICAN LEAGUE
Devil Rays 6, Blue Jays 2
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Rey Sanchez hit his first conventional home run in over two years, and Dewon Brazelton threw five shutout innings for the Devil Rays. Sanchez's second homer of the season -- a three-run shot -- came during a five-run, fourth inning that gave the Devil Rays a 5-0 lead. It was Sanchez's 15th career homer in his 4,684th at-bat, and his first home run into the stands since April 30, 2002, at Boston.
White Sox 9, Twins 6
MINNEAPOLIS -- Freddy Garcia got plenty of run support from his new team, winning his debut with the Chicago White Sox. Paul Konerko, Jose Valentin, Joe Crede and Aaron Rowand backed Garcia with home runs, and the White Sox moved one game ahead of the Twins in the AL Central -- two in the loss column. Rookie Joe Mauer hit the second of his two homers off Shingo Takatsu with one out in the ninth, ending Japan's career saves leader's scoreless streak at 262/3 innings.
Orioles 13, Royals 4
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Newly promoted Chad Mottola hit his first major league home run since 1996, and Miguel Tejada and David Newhan also connected in the Orioles' romp. Every Orioles starter scored as they matched a season high for runs. Javy Lopez was 4-for-4, scored three times and drove in a run. Melvin Mora, who had missed 10 games with a foot injury, was 2-for-4 and raised his average to .357 and Jerry Hairston had three hits.
Athletics 4, Angels 2
OAKLAND, Calif. -- Slumping Marco Scutaro hit a tiebreaking two-run single with two outs in the eighth inning for the Athletics. Scutaro, who's batting just .161 over his last 15 games, singled to right against Scot Shields (5-2) to snap an 0-for-8 skid and give Oakland its fifth win in seven games. Chad Bradford (4-4) pitched two-thirds of an inning for the win and Octavio Dotel worked the ninth for his second save in three opportunities since being acquired from Houston in a three-team trade last Thursday.
Rangers 9, Mariners 6
SEATTLE -- Kenny Rogers became the first 11-game winner in the majors, Hank Blalock hit a two-run homer, and the Rangers held on to beat the Mariners. Rogers (11-2), who hasn't lost since May 9, won his seventh straight decision. He faced one batter in the sixth, allowing three runs on six hits and struck out three. Texas was 22 games behind first-place Seattle at this point last season, but the AL West-leading Rangers (44-31) are only one game behind the best start in team history after 75 games, set in 1996.
NATIONAL LEAGUE
Astros 3, Cubs 2
CHICAGO -- In his fifth game since Houston acquired him from Kansas City, Carlos Beltran homered off LaTroy Hawkins (1-1) with two outs in the ninth. Roger Clemens' bid for his 11th victory was blown by Dan Miceli, who allowed Michael Barrett's eighth-inning homer, which tied it 2-all.
Expos 6, Phillies 3
PHILADELPHIA -- Juan Rivera hit a go-ahead RBI single with two outs in the eighth inning, and the Expos overcame Jim Thome's major league-leading 27th homer. Tony Batista and Brad Wilkerson homered for Montreal, which was 0-37 when trailing after seven innings dating to Sept. 16, 2003.
Reds 2, Mets 0
CINCINNATI -- Cory Lidle topped stingy Tom Glavine and shut down the Mets for the second time in a week for the Reds. Adam Dunn homered and Ryan Freel hit an RBI single off Glavine (7-5), whose 2.16 ERA run average is by far the best in the majors. The Reds snapped a three-game losing streak behind Lidle (6-5), who has beaten his former team in each of his last two starts.
Braves 9, Marlins 6
ATLANTA -- J.D. Drew homered twice and Sam McConnell earned his first major league win to lead the Braves. The game was delayed by rain for 75 minutes in the second inning, and rain fell throughout most of the rest of it. On Tuesday night, the teams waited out a 31/2-hour delay before the start, and the game ended at 1:24 a.m.
Brewers 5, Rockies 4
DENVER -- Ben Sheets struck out eight in seven-plus innings and Junior Spivey homered, helping the Brewers to their fourth straight victory. Chad Moeller added three hits and drove in a run for Milwaukee, on its longest winning streak since taking 10 straight last August.
Diamondbacks 8, Padres 5
PHOENIX -- Danny Bautista hit a go-ahead double in the seventh inning, and the Diamondbacks stopped their franchise-record losing streak at 11 games.
