Last year: Fiji's Vijay Singh won the first of four 2003 titles, closing with a 63 for a three-stroke victory over John Huston. Singh also won the 1995 tournament.
Last week: Phil Mickelson won the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic in his first start of the year, beating Skip Kendall on the first hole of a playoff to end an 18-month winless streak.
Notes: Mickelson, a former Arizona State star, won the 1996 tournament in a memorable playoff with Justin Leonard. Mickelson jumped from 16th to 12th in the world rankings Monday. ... Mark Calcavecchia won in 2001, shooting 65-60-64-67 for a 256 total, a tour record that was broken last year by Tommy Armour III in the Texas Open. Calcavecchia also won in 1989 and 1992. ... Chris DiMarco won the 2002 tournament, edging Kenny Perry and Japan's Kaname Yokoo by a stroke. ... The Pebble Beach National Pro-Am is next week, and Tiger Woods is expected to return the following week for his title defense in the Buick Invitational.

Purse: $1.8 million. Winner's share: $300,300.
Television: The Golf Channel (Thursday-Saturday, 1-5 a.m., 9 a.m.-noon; Sunday, 1-5 a.m., 9 a.m.-noon, 9-11:30 p.m.).
Last year: South Africa's Ernie Els set European, Australasian and Asian tour records with a 29-under total in a 10-stroke victory at Lake Karrinyup in Perth, Australia.
Last week: Germany's Marcel Siem made a 10-foot birdie putt on the third hole of a playoff with France's Raphael Jacquelin to win the Dunhill Championship in South Africa. France's Gregory Havret was eliminated on the second extra hole. ... Thailand's Boonchu Ruangkit won the Thailand Open, beating countryman Prayad Marksaeng and South Korea's Kim Jong-Duk by two strokes.
Notes: Els, the Sony Open winner two weeks ago on the PGA Tour, is making his first European tour start of the year. British Open champion Ben Curtis and PGA winner Shaun Micheel also are in the field along with Englishmen Nick Faldo, Justin Rose and Ian Poulter, Scotland's Colin Montgomerie and Wales' Ian Woosnam. ... Tiger Woods won the 1998 and 2001 tournaments. ... The European tour will be in Australia the next two weeks for the Heineken Classic and ANZ Championship.

Purse: $600,000 (Nos. 1-6, $20,000 each; Nos. 7-12, $30,000 each; Nos. 13-17, $40,000 each; No. 18, $100,000).
Television: ABC (Saturday-Sunday, 12:30-3 p.m.).
Players: Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Lee Trevino, Tom Watson.
Last year: Trevino holed a 10-foot birdie putt on the third extra hole to finish with six skins and $240,000. Hale Irwin was second with $200,000, and Nicklaus made $160,000.
Last week: Fuzzy Zoeller won the season-opening MasterCard Championship at Hualalai, birdieing the final three holes for an 8-under 64 and a one-stroke victory over Dana Quigley.
Notes: Nicklaus, who turned 64 last week, tied for sixth Sunday in the MasterCard, his best finish since tying for fourth in the 2001 U.S. Senior Open. The other three players struggled at Hualalai, with Watson finishing 33rd, Trevino 36th and Palmer last in the 39-man field. ... Palmer is 74, Trevino 64 and Watson 54. ... The Royal Caribbean Golf Classic, the first full-field event of the year, is next week in Key Biscayne, Fla.
