Parents trying to wean their kids from the sex-obsessed antics of "Austin Powers" may find a friend in "Johnny English."
This movie about a bumbling British spy is not free of potty humor. Johnny literally ends up in a pile of excrement on at least one occasion. But it's relatively clean potty humor (with a bit of language), all falling within the PG guidelines.
It's also a swell showcase for Rowan Atkinson, quite the star in England, though not as well known here. Some may recognize his voice from the "Mr. Bean" animated series, in which his character, drawn to look a lot like himself, creates problems that only he can solve. But more American children should connect with him as the voice of Zazu, the shrill and very funny bird adviser in "The Lion King."
The "Johnny English" plot involves a Frenchman (John Malkovich) hatching a nefarious scheme to steal the Crown Jewels, overthrow the British monarchy and rule in its place. Johnny, of course, must save the day, after he figures out if he's getting hindrance or help from Natalie Imbruglia and from his complicated spy equipment.
DVD extras include a look at the making of the film, a deleted scene and spy tips. But the best bet is the film itself.
"Johnny English" is available on DVD and VHS.
