The Pittsburgh area's all-time leading high school passer will play at Penn State -- as a defensive back.
Adam DiMichele, the Sto-Rox star who owns the PIAA District 7 career passing record, willingly agreed to switch from quarterback to defensive back so he could play at Penn State and coach Joe Paterno.
"I just want to play football and this is a great opportunity for me, whatever position I play," DiMichele said. "I guess you could say this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. ... I'll be playing for, in my perspective, the best coach in the history of college football."
DiMichele was 355-of-678 for 6,741 yards in his career, but Penn State was the only Division I-A school to offer the Class A standout a scholarship. DiMichele, also a basketball and baseball star at Sto-Rox, is 6-foot-1 and 175 pounds.
Coaching switch
A last-minute snag apparently prevented Lake-Lehman High School from hiring Parkland assistant coach Craig Waters as its football coach.
Waters is the son-of-law of Berwick coach George Curry, who owns the Pennsylvania record for career football coaching victories. Curry got his start as Lake-Lehman's coach.
The Times-Leader newspaper of Wilkes-Barre reported Lake-Lehman was set to hire Waters until he sought a teaching position for his wife. One wasn't available, so Lake-Lehman hired Greg Myers, a former player at nearby Crestwood and an assistant football coach at Elizabethtown.
Myers replaces Bob Langan, whose teams were 9-31 in four seasons.
Ruling upheld
The PIAA has upheld a District 4 ruling that barred Lewisburg High School freshman Adam Pollini from wrestling this season.
The PIAA agreed with the district ruling that Pollini transferred from Mifflinburg for athletic reasons.
Pollini will not be permitted to wrestle at Lewisburg until Dec. 4, 2004.
Champions row
In a span of three matches last week, Easton wrestler Alex Krom took on champions from three states -- going a more-than-respectable 2-1 in the process.
Krom was beaten on Jan. 15 by Reading's Charles Griffin, last year's PIAA Class AAA 125-pound champion.
On Saturday, he defeated Ohio champion Cameron Doggett of St. Paris Graham and Minnesota champion Richard Fessler of Apple Valley in the National High School Coaches Association Final Four of Wrestling at Easton. Krom was chosen as the meet's outstanding wrestler.
Milestone wins
Two District 3 girls basketball coaches recently surpassed coaching milestones.
Trinity coach Harry DeFrank gained his 500th victory when the Shamrocks defeated Central Dauphin East 54-23 last week. DeFrank has a 501-100 record in 20 seasons and his teams have won two PIAA championships. Only two of his 20 teams have failed to win at least 20 games.
DeFrank joins Lancaster Catholic boys coach Lamar Kauffman and Lebanon Catholic girls coach Patti Hower as the only District 3 coaches with 500 victories.
Another District 3 girls basketball coach, Cumberland Valley's John Smith, won his 400th game. He has a 402-254 record in 27 seasons.
