NHL ROUNDUP
Saturday's other games
Flyers 2, Sabres 1
PHILADELPHIA -- Jeremy Roenick had two goals and Robert Esche stopped 25 shots, leading Philadelphia. Esche picked up his 14th victory of the season, adding to his career high, and the Flyers won for the fourth time in five starts. Ales Kotalik scored for the Sabres, who have dropped four of five. Roenick scored on the Flyers' first shot, at 3:19 of the first period, redirecting a shot by Mike Comrie past Buffalo goaltender Mika Noronen. Kotalik tied the game at 1:03 of the second, scoring on a slap shot from outside the left circle. Roenick scored the eventual game-winner at 9:05 of the second on a one-timer from the right circle.
Islanders 3, Thrashers 0
ATLANTA -- Rick DiPietro strengthened his grip on the Islanders' starting goaltending job with an often-spectacular 25-save performance. Starting for the seventh time in nine games, DiPietro was especially sharp in denying Ilya Kovalchuk on a handful of glorious scoring chances. Mattias Weinhandl, Oleg Kvasha and Arron Asham supplied the offense that paced DiPietro's second NHL shutout, both coming this season.
Panthers 2, Bruins 1
BOSTON -- Roberto Luongo made 43 saves and Florida hung on. Juraj Kolnik and Valeri Bure each scored a power-play goal for the Panthers. Luongo's strong game also included a save on P.J. Axlesson's penalty shot with 6:32 to play in the third period. Patrice Bergeron's 14th goal with 1:16 remaining helped Boston avert a club-record sixth shutout at home this season.
Senators 9, Rangers 1
OTTAWA -- Bryan Smolinski scored twice in the first period and Daniel Alfredsson had a goal and two assists as Ottawa ruined Jaromir Jagr's debut with the Rangers. Jussi Markkanen allowed six goals in the first and third periods and Jason LaBarbera, recalled Friday from the AHL, yielded three in the second as the Rangers' losing streak hit four games and their winless streak was stretched to six (0-4-2). Jagr made his first two appearances with the Rangers on the power play as Ottawa drew a pair of penalties within the first 4:44. He threw his linemates offside on his first two offensive rushes, and it was all downhill from there for the Rangers. Zdeno Chara also scored twice, and Jason Spezza, Radek Bonk, Josh Langfeld and Martin Havlat added goals.
Maple Leafs 4, Canadiens 1
MONTREAL -- Bryan McCabe, Joe Nieuwendyk and Mikael Renberg scored second-period goals in Toronto's victory. Captain Mats Sundin added a third-period goal to help the Eastern Conference-leading Maple Leafs win their third straight game. Richard Zednik scored for the Canadiens. The Canadiens opened the scoring midway through the second period when a point shot went off Mike Ribeiro's skate to Zednik, who had plenty of time to shoot over goalie Ed Belfour. Just under two minutes later, McCabe beat Montreal goalie Jose Theodore with a one-timer from the point. Nieuwendyk took a drop pass from Nik Antropov in the slot and scored on a wrist shot under the crossbar with 5:24 remaining, and Sundin won a battle for the puck with Andrei Markov to feed Renberg in the slot with 16 seconds to go in the period.
