Man, dogs escape fire
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Damage is expected to reach $70,000 after a fire at a Hempfield Township home.
David King, township fire chief, said the blaze broke out around 1 a.m. Friday at the Hartman residence at 46 Hamburg Road.
King didn't know Hartman's first name but said he lived there alone with four dogs and a cat.
Hartman fell asleep on his couch watching television and awakened to find the house filled with smoke.
He and the four dogs were able to get out, but his pet cat perished, King said.
About half of the house was engulfed in flames when firefighters reached the scene, King said, noting that nine departments and 40 firefighters responded to the alarm.
