K. of C. offers benefit
The Knights of Columbus will pay an accidental death benefit of up $2,500 to the families of members of the Knights who are killed while in military service in Afghanistan and Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom. The benefit, ranging from $1,000 to $2,500 depending on the deceased's years of membership in the Knights, is in addition to any dividends due the family from a Knights of Columbus life insurance policy.

Awarded Bronze Star
Army Sgt. Maj. Evelyn Hollis, daughter of Evelyn L. Hollis of Hubbard, a 1977 graduate of Hubbard High School, has been awarded the Bronze Star for her efforts with an air defense artillery brigade during Operation Iraqi Freedom. She assisted in pre-deployment planning for two battalions and two other units, and in the reception, staging and movement of 700 people into Kuwait, where she established and maintained the brigade tactical operations center. Hollis has a master's degree in human resources and management from Webster University in St. Louis, Mo.

Schooling completed
Air Force Reserve Technical Sgt. David A. Gurnak has completed the electrical systems school at Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas. Gurnak, an interior-exterior electrician with the 910th Airlift Wing's Civil Engineering Squadron at the Youngstown Reserve Air Station in Vienna, is a son of Stella Gurnak of Youngstown, and is a 1975 graduate of Youngstown Woodrow Wilson High school.

Assigned to the 910th
Two area residents have been assigned to the 910th Airlift Wing at Youngstown Air Reserve Station in Vienna. They are:
Reserve Senior Airman Elizabeth K. Robinson, a medical service technician. She is the sister of Martha R. Brogdon, Alfonso Lockett and Reuben Robinson, all of Youngstown. She is a 1985 graduate of Youngstown Chaney High School.
Reserve Airman 1st Class Michael J. Dunn II, an air transportation apprentice with the 76th Aerial Port Squadron. He is the son of Michael J. and Monica A. Dunn of Niles, and is a 2003 graduate of Niles McKinley High School.

Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Ronald J. Gallucci was promoted to his present rank while assigned as a flight superintendent with the 319th Mission Support Squadron, Grand Forks, N.D.
He is the son of Ronald F. and Helen Gallucci of New Castle, Pa., and his wife, Judy, is the daughter of Paul and Helen Hustine of Carlisle, Pa. Gallucci is a 1981 graduate of New Castle Senior High School, and received an associate degree in 1992 from the Community College of the Air Force.

Joined mission in Iraq
Army Spec. Chad W. Miller participated in Operation Iraqi Freedom overseas. Miller, a military policeman, is the son of Carl R. Miller of New Martinsville, W.Va., and Traci A. Blair of New Waterford. He is a 1999 graduate of Magnolia High School, New Martinsville.
Helped with distress call
Navy Lt. j.g. Thomas J. Farina, son of Robin and Thomas J. Farina of Boardman, was aboard the guided missile cruiser USS Gettysburg when it answered a distress call from an Iraqi freighter in the Arabian Gulf. Members of Farina's unit transported an Iraqi seaman via helicopter to the USS Enterprise for medical treatment. Farina is a 1997 graduate of Boardman High School, and is a 2001 graduate of the Naval Academy.
Crew chief in Japan
Air Force Senior Airman Jerret T. Hupp, son of James T. and Sherry L. Hupp of Negley, is an aircraft maintenance crew chief with the 364th Airlift Wing at Yokota Air Base, Japan, the only airlift wing in the Far East. The base is the primary United States military port in Japan. Hupp, a 2000 graduate of Heartland Christian School in Columbiana, oversees maintenance on C-130E Hercules cargo planes.
