TAC GIRLS Cornell's first basket puts senior in Hubbard's 1,000-point club



Girard defeated Newton Falls made Indians 11-1 overall and 7-0 in the TAC.
LEAVITTSBURG -- Lynle Cornell became the fourth girls basketball player for Hubbard High to top the 1,000-point mark for her career in Thursday's 63-36 win at LaBrae.
Cornell, a senior, achieved the milestone on her first basket of the game, a 3-pointer. The other Eagles to score 1,000 points are Kacie Coonce, Katy Jo Mroski and Cara Hendrix.
Cornell scored 12 points in the first quarter as Hubbard jumped ahead, 20-3. She added 13 in the second quarter and finished with 28 for the game.
Loni Sargent and Callie Oyler scored 10 points each as the Eagles (8-4, 6-1) remain a game behind Girard in the Trumbull Athletic Conference race.
Natalie Bate and Maggie D'Orio led the Vikings (2-10, 0-7) with eight points each.
Girard 53, Newton Falls 28
GIRARD -- The Indians shut out the Tigers in the second quarter and allowed only seven points in the third.
Cachet Murray paced the Indians (11-1, 7-0 TAC) with 15 points, while Lora Doran grabbed eight rebounds.
Kim Drake sparked Newton Falls with six points.
Liberty 48, Lakeview 29
LIBERTY -- Cherie Austin collected 12 points and eight rebounds for the Leopards (10-3, 5-2 TAC).
Lena Esmail and Chenelle Mills also scored 11 points for Liberty.
Natalie Fudzina paced the Bulldogs with nine points.
Brookfield 38, Champion 34
CHAMPION -- Raquel Brenner scored 16 points and Brookfield outscored Champion 14-11 in the fourth quarter to hold on.
Kaitlyn Nasci added eight points for Brookfield (7-6, 4-3 TAC).
Elizabeth Ghindia had nine points to lead Champion (6-7, 2-5).
