LIMA -- Rebecca Davidson, a third-year flute performance major at Oberlin Conservatory, is performing with the Lima Symphony Orchestra today in St. John Church in Delphos, Ohio. Davidson, who performed twice with LSO last week, earned that right by winning the symphony's Young Artist Competition last March. She is a daughter of Bill and Edie Davidson of Boardman.
Guest artists to perform
YOUNGSTOWN -- Clarinetist Lux Brahn and Swiss pianist Hanny Schmid-Wyss will present a free recital at 8 p.m. next Thursday in Bliss Recital Hall at Youngstown State University. The duo will perform selections from Robert Schumann, Antoni Szalowski and Niels W. Gade. Safari guide presentation
JEFFERSON -- Author Dick Houston of Ashtabula will discuss "Out of Africa: Safari Yarns & amp; Elephant Tales" from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday in Henderson Memorial Public Library, 54 E. Jefferson St. Admission is free. Houston will show slides and tell stories of his work as an African safari guide and founder of Elefence International, which works to preserve elephants.
Crandall Gallery exhibits
ALLIANCE -- The work of Carey McDougall and Maria Rogal will be displayed in Mount Union College's Crandall Gallery through Feb. 6. McDougall, an assistant professor of art at Kent State University Stark Campus, presents "That's Me. No. That's You," exploring the feminist tradition of critiquing exclusive, hierarchical and oppressive models of self through art forms that have been devalued as low art, craft or collaborations that de-emphasize individuality. Rogal, an assistant professor of graphic design at the University of Florida, presents "Embrace: The Mexico Series," which shows a tourist's visual exploration of Mexican identity and culture through photography, design and collage, and writing. The gallery is in Cope Hall at Simpson Street and Union Avenue. Hours are 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. weekdays and 1 to 6 p.m. weekends. Admission is free.
Niles jazz concert
NILES -- Jazz musician Maynard Ferguson and his Big Bop Nouveau Band will perform Feb. 29 in the Niles McKinley High School auditorium. His appearance is sponsored by the Niles Band Boosters. Doors open at 6:15 p.m. with complimentary refreshments and the Niles Jazz Band. Playwriting contest
FRANKLIN, Pa. -- Barrow Civic Theatre is conducting a contest for playwrights from Pennsylvania, Ohio, New York and West Virginia. Writers are asked to submit unpublished, unproduced one-act plays by April 30. The entrance fee is $15. Two winners will be announced Aug. 31 and will receive $250 each with possible production. MEADVILLE, Pa. -- Country music singer Trace Adkins will be featured in fund-raising concerts for the Meadville Fraternal Order of Police at 2 and 7 p.m. March 14 in the Allegheny College Auditorium.
