METRO ATHLETIC CONFERENCE Fender's 28 lead Poland to 10th win



HOWLAND -- Junior guard Chad Fender scored 28 points to help lift the Poland High boys basketball team to a 61-56 win over Howland, in a Metro Athletic Conference game on Tuesday.
The Bulldogs (10-2, 6-0 MAC) trailed 16-11 after eight minutes, but Fender scored 10 points in the second quarter when Poland took a 34-26 lead at the break.
Howland (2-11, 0-6) had more baskets (21-20) and more 3-pointers (4-2), but Poland was 19-for-21 at the free throw line.
Jeff Proctor scored 14 points for the Tigers.
Alliance 67, Struthers 42
STRUTHERS -- The Aviators (6-5, 2-4) rushed out to a 31-13 lead by the break.
Bylynn Hatcher paced the Aviators' balanced scoring attack with 15 points. Austin Banks chipped in with 11 and Mark Garner had 10.
Mike Duponty tallied 11 points for the Wildcats (3-9, 1-5) and Marco Ramunno added 10.
Salem 62, Niles 59
SALEM -- The Quakers (5-6, 4-1) took charge with a 19-11 spurt in the third quarter, then held on for the win.
Tyler Pierce sparked the Quakers with 16 points and four assists. Joe Smith chipped in with 15 points and seven rebounds. Landon Heath added 12 points and Tom Jesko finished with 10.
Niles (4-7, 3-3) was led by Kevin Robertson with 20 points and Dan Jones added 19.
Canfield 73, Springfield 45
CANFIELD -- The Cardinals (9-3) put the non-league encounter out of reach, 59-32, by the end of the third quarter.
Andrew Havas triggered the Cardinals' balanced attack with 18 points, four steals and four assists. Jordan Ferns had 19 points and Chad Baker 15 points and 10 rebounds.
Marc Russell led the Tigers (5-4) with 10 points.
