hDesigning a new house, but with an old look
Virginia architect Russell Versaci doesn't think homeowners should have to choose between an older home that's loaded with character and a newer home that's lower on maintenance, but also lower on charm. He recently published "Creating a New Old House" as a way of showing how to have the best of both.
In the book, Versaci gives a quick lesson on building a house with a sense of history by following his eight pillars of traditional design. He then takes readers on a tour of 17 "new old" houses. Sidebars explain the hallmarks of the homes' styles, highlight architectural details and explain techniques that were used to give the homes their classic character.
"Creating a New Old House" is published by The Taunton Press and is priced at $39.95.
