Champion High to reopen
CHAMPION -- Superintendent Pamela Hood expects Champion High School to reopen Friday after problems with a boiler caused administrators to cancel classes today. Hood said the problems started Wednesday evening, and workers weren't able to resolve the problem by early this morning.
Red Lobster fire
NILES -- Diners were forced to evacuate the Red Lobster restaurant on Youngstown-Warren Road when an electrical fire broke out in the kitchen. Fire crews were called to the restaurant just before 1:30 p.m. Wednesday. The fire spread into a partition near the ovens before a restaurant employee doused the flames with a fire extinguisher. City firefighters removed a portion of the wall to make sure the fire was out and to check the insulation. The restaurant is expected to reopen within the next few days.
Fatal crash in Ellsworth
ELLSWORTH -- A three-car crash at U.S. Route 224 and state Route 45 killed one driver, Ann Leslie, 86, of Boardman, and injured another driver, Ann Marie Nehfa, 26, of Austintown, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol's Canfield post. The patrol had no further information available this morning on the crash, which happened about 3 p.m. Wednesday.
Equipment is damaged
SALEM -- Someone used a drill to flatten three tires on a piece of construction equipment parked along Bentley Drive near Continental Drive, police said. Damage to the front-end loader, owned by Kirila Construction of Brookfield, was set at about $2,700. The crime, reported at 8:45 a.m. Wednesday, appears to have been a random act of vandalism, said police Lt. Don Beeson.
Guns stolen in break-in
SHARON, Pa. -- Guns were the target of a burglar in the 400 block of Grant Street. Police said the thief entered through an unlocked first-floor window between 3:30 and 9:30 p.m. Tuesday. A locked gun case was forced open and five firearms were stolen. They include a Ruger Redhawk revolver with a Leopold scope, an H & amp;R .22-caliber rifle, an 8 mm Mauser rifle with a 6X Leopold scope and a Remington Model 1187 12-gauge shotgun.
Adult education classes
AUSTINTOWN -- Registration is under way for the township schools' winter adult continuing education program, which begins Feb. 9. Classes that will be offered include yoga, walking, computers, cake decorating and money management. Political group elections
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Democrats of the 17th and 6th Districts, a local political organization, elected J. Robert Lyden of Canfield as its president. Lyden, who served as the organization's first president, replaces Mark Belinky of Boardman. Belinky opted not to seek re-election to a third term, and instead will concentrate on his Mahoning County commissioner campaign. The organization elected Connie Coloutes of Poland as its first vice president and Beth Stanko of Boardman, who is also running for county commissioner, as its second vice president. Mary Morrison of Poland was selected secretary, and Andy Hamady of Poland was re-elected treasurer.
Stolen-car pursuit
YOUNGSTOWN -- James Lundy, 40, of West Indianola Avenue was arrested at 1:10 a.m. today on Parkview Avenue after police pursued the stolen car he was driving on the South Side. An inventory of the 1991 Buick Regal turned up five cartons of cigarettes, which Austintown police said had been stolen from a store in their community, reports show. Police charged Lundy with receiving stolen property, failure to comply with a police order and driving under suspension. Austintown police also intend to charge Lundy, reports show.
