Event highlights Chinese culture, welcomes the Year of the Monkey
The Chinese New Year celebration is under way, and this year is the Year of the Monkey, which actually begins Saturday. In the Chinese culture, the calendar is based on a combination of lunar and solar movements. The lunar year 2004 marks the year 4702 on the Chinese calendar. A celebration was at Youngstown State University's Kilcawley Center in the Chestnut Room. Above, sisters Lingyun Zhang, front, and Chaoxia Zhang perform a dance to traditional music. Below right, Anna Yeung, foreground, 10, and Diana Zhang, 10, both of Howland, watch the performance. Below left, the Zhang sisters, Lingyun, Lingrong and Chaoxia, pull off an acrobatic balancing act that drew applause from the audience. The sisters are from Wuhu, Anhui Province in China, and have performed throughout the United States. The event, held over the weekend, was co-sponsored by the Chinese Association of the Greater Youngstown Area and YSU.
