It's not a hard-knock life for "Annie" fans. Columbia TriStar has just put out a special anniversary edition, complete with Sing-Along and Act-Along DVD features.
Many critics knocked this film of the comic strip turned Broadway hit as being overproduced and overblown. But this hummable musical about the plucky, red-headed orphan who finds happiness (and her fortune) at the home of crusty old Daddy Warbucks is still affecting.
And if overblown means over-the-top performances by Carol Burnett, Bernadette Peters, Tim Curry, Albert Finney and Aileen Quinn as Annie, you won't hear any complaints here.
Want to sing with Annie or as Annie? A special feature allows you to click on the scenes where she performs "Maybe," "Tomorrow" and "It's A Hard-Knock Life." You get the words and the music. You can sing along with Annie or you can choose the option where her voice is silent. Want to try acting as Annie? The now grown-up Quinn guides you through three scenes in which the words are also at the bottom of the screen.
Parents, too, may appreciate the educational extras in which kids can learn about the Great Depression and the historical details about when and where the story is set.
