TROTWOOD, OHIO Dayton officer shoots suspect in police shootings

The suspect was caught after a police chase.
TROTWOOD, Ohio (AP) -- A suspect in the shooting of a Montgomery County deputy sheriff and a Trotwood police officer was in critical but stable condition Monday night after being shot twice by Dayton police, authorities said.
Suspect Matthew G. Grimes, 33, of Union, was shot once in the leg, said Dayton police Lt. John Huber, who did not know the location of the other wound.
Officer Brent Rasor was in serious condition at Miami Valley Hospital with a throat wound, and Deputy Johnathan Miller was in stable condition at Good Samaritan Hospital with a mouth wound, authorities said.
Hospital officials would not provide conditions Monday night.
Grimes was arrested Saturday on two traffic warrants but was released from the Montgomery County jail Sunday afternoon, authorities said.
Rasor and Miller stopped Grimes about 11 p.m. Sunday at a gas station in this Dayton suburb to question him about a home burglary that had occurred nearby. The description given by the homeowner matched Grimes and his car, police said.
Suspect had handgun
The officers took Grimes into custody but missed a small handgun, said Trotwood police Capt. Daniel Swafford. Grimes opened fire on them and fled in the cruiser, Swafford said.
Police said they chased Grimes until he crashed into a telephone pole in downtown Dayton. Grimes got out of the cruiser and pointed his gun at Dayton police Officer Mike Saylors, who shot Grimes twice, police said.
Grimes pleaded no contest in Champaign County in 1990 to felonious assault and aggravated vehicular homicide in the death of Kevin May, 29. He was paroled from prison Oct. 18, 1999.
Grimes pleaded guilty in Montgomery County in 2002 to three felony counts involving prescriptions for an addictive pain killer. He was placed on probation last January.
