Phantoms win
CHICAGO --Anthony Canzoneri scored two goals to lead the Youngstown Phantoms to a 5-1 victory over the Fairbanks Icedogs during Thursday's opening round of the North American Hockey League's four-day Windy City Showcase.
The Phantoms (16-12-7, 39 points), who snapped a three-game losing streak, will play the Texarkana Bandits at 9:15 p.m. tonight.
Power play goals by Canzoneri and Brian Moore gave the Phantoms a 2-0 lead after the first period. Youngstown increased its advantage to 3-0 on a second-period goal by Justin Bodine before Fairbanks (17-8-5, 39 points) scored its only goal of the night.
In the final period, a power-play goal by Rob Rassey made it 4-1. An empty-net goal by Canzoneri ended the scoring.
The 18-year-old right wing has eight goals this season. Tyler Sims made 32 saves for the Phantoms, and improved his record to 9-7-5.
Clarett clearedto work out
COLUMBUS -- One day after pleading guilty to impeding a police investigation, Ohio State running back Maurice Clarett was cleared to rejoin team workouts for the first time since the second week of the 2003 season.
Clarett is permitted to lift weights and run when winter conditioning workouts begin later this month.
Ohio State athletic director Andy Geiger said Clarett must still satisfy academic performance, class attendance and undisclosed "personal growth" standards before the university will consider petitioning the NCAA for Clarett's reinstatement for the 2004 season.
Sharon coach resigns
SHARON, Pa. -- Sharon High football coach Bo Reichart resigned earlier this week, citing "personal reasons." Reichart compiled a 9-11 record over two seasons.

Browns talk with Wolf
BEREA -- Former Green Bay Packers general manager Ron Wolf visited the Cleveland Browns' training facility Thursday to speak with officials for the team, which is looking to upgrade its personnel staff.
Wolf, 65, who has been retired since 2000, said from his Maryland home that nothing was decided. He declined to detail his talks with the Browns, referring questions to the team.
OHSAA commissioner announces retirement
COLUMBUS -- Ohio High School Athletic Association Commissioner Clair Muscaro will retire July 31 after 20 years with the organization.
Muscaro, 70, joined the association as an assistant commissioner in 1984 after 28 years as a teacher, coach and administrator. He became the eighth commissioner on Jan. 1, 1990.
When he retires on July 31, Muscaro will have completed the second-longest tenure of any commissioner, second only to the association's first commissioner, H.R. Townsend. He served from 1929 to 1944.

Suarez beat Karolina Sprem 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 in one semifinal, while Farina Elia defeated Julia Vakulenko 6-3, 7-6 (5) in the other.
* MELBOURNE, Australia -- David Nalbandian tamed top-ranked Andy Roddick's powerful serves in a three-set victory today at the Commonwealth Bank International, putting him in the final against Andre Agassi.
The match lasted 2 hours, 15 minutes as Nalbandian, seeded eighth for next week's Australian Open, took a big third-set lead then had to hold on 3-6, 7-6 (2), 7-6 (4).
In other matches, Americans Taylor Dent and Robby Ginepri finished their Australian Open preparations with victories.
