The Middletown Bishop Fenwick boys closed the 42-year-old John "Butch" Rossi gym Friday night with a win over Trenton Edgewood, 81-71. The gym's namesake was honored during a halftime ceremony. The Falcons will open a new gymnasium next season.
In the same game, Brian Hangbers scored 32 points to break the Edgewood career record with 1,080.
Patience pays
Piketon won its first Scioto Valley Conference title in 12 years, beating Williamsport Westfall 74-71 in overtime. Amazingly, four of the Redstreaks' starters fouled out during regulation. Two seasons ago, Piketon went 0-21 with three freshmen in the starting lineup. Those freshmen are now juniors. Twice this season they trailed by 13 points with 2 minutes left but forced overtime in each game, splitting the results.
Small, mighty
By defeating Canal Winchester 73-67, Circleville Logan Elm (19-1) captured its first Mid-State League Buckeye Division championship since 1981. The Braves, who are one game away from tying a school record for victories in a season, have thrived with a five-guard attack with no starters taller than 6-1.

Kettering Alter coach Joe Petrocelli became the second coach in state history to win over 700 boys games when his team beat Cincinnati Purcell Marian, 41-37, on Feb. 17. He joins Dick Kortakrax of Kalida in the 700 club.
Petrocelli, 66, has been at Alter for 40 years and has a career record of 700-227 with three state championships. He is the only basketball coach the school has had since it opened.
Among his top players were brothers Jim and John Paxson -- now the general managers of the Cleveland Cavaliers and Chicago Bulls, respectively. Ironically, Petrocelli's 700th win came against his alma mater, where he got his first coaching job after graduating from Xavier.
Noteworthy
Brandon Lampley hit a driving layup with 12 seconds left in overtime to lift Hamilton to a 50-48 victory over Cincinnati Princeton, earning Big Blue the Greater Miami Conference championship. It was the 15th straight win for Hamilton (18-2) and ended Princeton's nine-game winning streak since losing at Hamilton on Jan. 16.
Vanlue's Angie Lee scored 35 points and set a school single-game record with six 3-pointers in a 71-63 win over Lima Perry.
And Pandora-Gilboa's Austin Basinger missed two potential game-winning 3-pointers in the final seconds of Friday's game against Hardin Northern but was fouled on the second attempt. He made all three free throws in the Rockets' 34-33 win.
