MULTI-SPORTS Kattouf expands physical capacity

The Howland optometrist uses science to improve as a runner and bicyclist.
HOWLAND -- Dr. Rick Kattouf is not known for following convention. The 32-year old Howland optometrist continues to push his physical limits.
Four years ago, Kattouf began racing multi-sport events, like 'duathlons,' which are a running, cycling and running format.
He had become the number one ranked 'duathlete' in the nation age 30-34 and number four overall.
He has utilized science in order to improve his performance. Kattouf sleeps in a specially constructed bedroom that simulates 10,000 feet above altitude. This philosophy, live high (at altitude), train low (at sea level), naturally increases red blood cell production and EPO thereby improving endurance.
"Colorado Altitude Training's altitude room has been nothing short of amazing," said Kattouf. "Sleeping in this room continues to build my endurance. Definitely a secret weapon of mine."
National victories
In 2003, Kattouf capped off the season with two national championship victories. Coach Mike Niederpruem, of Carmichael Training Systems, has been instrumental in Kattouf's 'duathlon' success.
"Mike has been coaching me since April 2000," said Kattouf. "He and I just click and we have a great coach-athlete relationship."
Kattouf also attributes a his success to his sponsors who are part of teamkattouf.com. His latest sponsor acquisitions are Go Fast energy drink and a Lakeside Bicycles in Cortland.
"Each and every one of my sponsors is very supportive," said Kattouf. "I am very thankful for their contributions which enable me to have continued success."
For the second year in a row, Kattouf will race for Baker's Breakfast Cookie, an all-natural, high energy, nutritious cookie. Kattouf is one of only six male athletes in the country chosen to race for Baker's in 2004.
On Aug. 1, Kattouf will race the 'duathlon' long course world championships in Fredrecia, Denmark. This consists of a 12.4-mile run, followed by a 75-mile bike ride, then a 6.2-mile run. "I want to bring a world championship title back to Warren," said Kattouf.
