Schedule of events at Mill Creek MetroParks.
March 1-31: Registration for Children's Summer Vegetable Gardening Program. This hands-on gardening program is for children who have completed first grade. Each child will have their own 3-by-10-foot garden at the MetroParks Farm in Canfield to tend all summer. Classes meet Saturdays, April 24 and May 22 from 9 -11 a.m. Beginning in June, children will meet every Wednesday morning through August. Final class will be Sept. 28. March 2: 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Beginning Ikebana. Members of Ikebana Youngstown will mentor new students who would like to learn the art of arranging fresh flowers in a Japanese style. Flowers and supplies will be available for use in the classroom. Call (330) 740-7116 to register. Fee: $10 R, $13 NR.
March 2, 11, 18, 25: 5:30-7 p.m. Yoga in the Garden (Level 2). Maintain a healthy outlook while learning the basics of energizing yoga movements taught by Heidi Suraci. Herbal tea will be served after class. Call (330) 740-7116 to register. Fee: $36.
March 3: 10-11 a.m. or 1-2 p.m. Zinnias are flowers that children can easily identify in the garden. Preschoolers ages 3-5 accompanied by adults will decorate wreaths with dried zinnias and colorful everlastings. March 6: 1-3 p.m. Grafting is a technique for gardeners who wish to grow hardy or unusual cultivars. Joe Stupka will share years of grafting experience through demonstrations and slides. March 6: 8 p.m. This is the time when plants and animals begin to awaken from their period of rest. Some American Indian tribes referred to this month's moon as the Awakening Moon. A walk under the moon begins at Yellow Creek Park, Struthers. About 2 miles, difficult rating because of extensive steps.

March 7: 2 p.m. Trace the path of the pre-glacial Sangamon River, also known as Old Mill Creek, following clues from 10,000 years ago. Along the way, participants will see the scenic landscape created by the geologic forces of long ago. Call (330) 740-7116 to find the meeting place. About 2 miles, moderate difficulty with hills.
March 10: 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Fellows Riverside Gardens, Ohio State University Extension Mahoning County, and the Mahoning Valley Landscape & amp; Nursery Association will sponsor a spring horticulture clinic. Topics will focus on innovative ideas for the green industry. Vendors will display current service products. Call (330) 740-7116 to register. Fee: $35 ($25 MVLNA members).
March 11: 10, 10:45 or 11:30 a.m. Two-year-olds and their adult companions are invited to learn more about Ohio's state animal, the white-tailed deer. This program will include a story and a craft. Call (330) 740-7107 to register.
March 13: 1:30-3 p.m. Children 6 and older will start a variety of seedlings in family gardens. We'll plant sweet peas, cotton and unusual vegetables. Held at the MetroParks Farm in Canfield. Call (330) 740-7116 to register. Fee: $6.
March 14: 2 p.m. Each spring as warmer weather returns, the sap begins to flow in the maple trees. Used as a sweetener by American Indians, maple syrup is still popular. We'll learn about the history of maple sugaring and tap a few trees. Program will be indoors and outdoors. Held at Yellow Creek Park, Struthers.
March 18: 6:30-7:30 p.m. Deby Clark will demonstrate basic design concepts for arranging roses. Presented by the Mahoning Valley Rose Society, the program will be of special interest to rose enthusiasts who are planning to enter flower shows. Call (330) 740-7116 to register. Fee: $5 R, $7 NR.
March 19: 8:30-10 a.m. View highlights of the interesting seasonal changes that abound in Fellows Riverside Gardens on this walk. March 20: 8:30 a.m.-noon. Ohio author Debra Knapke will present her favorite topic, "Using Annuals to Add Color and Interest Into Your Garden." She will be available to autograph her gardening books. March 21: 2 p.m. Explore the Newport Wetlands for signs of the spring season. Meet at Newport Wetlands parking lot. About 3 miles, easy rating with steps and lots of mud.
March 23: 7 p.m. Join Patty McHenry, volunteer ambassador for Cornell Lab of Ornithology and Mahoning County coordinator for the Ohio Bluebird Society, as she presents a program about the bluebird. Learn about their habits, diet and housing requirements at this month's meeting. Social time begins at 6:30 p.m.; program begins at 7 p.m. Held at the MetroParks Farm in Canfield.
March 24: 6:30-8:30 p.m. Lighten up your day with a carefree bouquet of daffodils and purple statice arranged in a grapevine basket. Dolly Vivalo will guide you to create this springtime arrangement of fresh flowers. Call (330) 740-7116 to register. Fee: $25 R, $32 NR.
March 24: This is the deadline to register for the boating course, which will be from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. April 3. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources: Division of Watercraft will offer the Ohio Boater Education Course at Yellow Creek Park Lodge, Struthers. People born after Jan. 1, 1982, are required to complete an OBEC course in order to operate any watercraft over 10 horsepower. Topics include Ohio and federal boating laws, navigation rules and safe boating practices. Completion of this course may qualify people for boat insurance discounts. Call (330) 740-7106 to register. March 28: 2 p.m. Family and friends are invited to hear selected readings from Felix Salten's classic tale of a young deer's life and all of its wonders. Meet at Ford Nature Center.
