Fox, Jeren honored by coaches



Each received awards recently from the Ohio Association.

The Ohio Association of Track & amp; Cross Country Coaches recently honored Boardman's Jim Fox and Poland's John Jeren for their outstanding contributions to the sport.
Fox, the former athletic director at Boardman High, received the Ed Barker Award which is the highest honor given by the association for outstanding service to the sport. Fox has coached many area athletes and has served as both a cross country and track official for 36 years.
One of the many meets that Fox directs is the Spartan Cross Country Invitational, which hosts 3200 athletes, 200 workers, and 10,000 spectators.
He has also officiated at the state track meet for 20 years.
Distinguished service
Jeren was the recipient of the Distinguished Service Award. Jeren served as chairman of the committee whose work resulted in an eight-lane, all-weather track for Poland High School.
Jeren has also worked with the Poland Track Invitational since its inception in 1996. He also serves as an official scorer for many track and cross country meets. Most recently, he has worked with local coaches to introduce on-line Internet registration for meets.
Also recognized for being named District One coaches of the year were West Branch girls track coach Bob Altenhof, Howland boys track coach Jack Tominey and Maplewood girls cross country coach Dave Deeter.
In his 22 years of coaching track, Altenhof has had 29 state qualifiers with 22 of those athletes earning All-Ohio honors and five winning state championships. Last season, Altenhof guided the West Branch girls to an 8-0 record, conference title, and regional championship. He was also named Vindicator Girls Track Coach of the Year.
Tominey honored
Having coached for 30 years, Tominey has had 32 Division I state qualifiers in track. Last season, Tominey led his team to the Trumbull County championship. He has been named Vindicator Coach of the Year and also has received Trumbull County Coach of the Year honors 10 times.
A 10 year coaching veteran, Deeter guided the girls cross country team to a 38-0 regular season record. His team also captured championships for Suburban League, Trumbull County, and district meets. Deeter has been honored as Trumbull Country Coach of the Year in cross country the past three seasons.
Finally, Maplewood cross country coach Ted Rupe was honored for his state championship cross country team.
