AMATEUR BOXING Southside Boxing Club to showcase 10-bout card

The event will be a forerunner to this area's Golden Gloves.
YOUNGSTOWN -- Just as he did last year, Jack Loew and his Southside Boxing Club will promote an amateur boxing show at the Krakusy Hall, 2205 South Ave., as a forerunner to this area's Golden Gloves. There will be a 10-bout card March 27 with the doors opening at 6 p.m. and the first bout at 7:30.
Last year Loew brought amateur boxing back to Youngstown when he held a two-night Golden Gloves Tournament at Krakusy Hall for local boxing fans. This year, if there are enough participants, Loew will take the spring golden gloves tournament to three nights with a possible third night at the Struthers Fieldhouse.
"We had an amateur show last year at Krakusy Hall a month before the gloves were held that sort of whet the appetite of local boxing fans and grabbed the interest of some kids who had a desire to box," said Loew. "Perhaps this show can spark the same interest in the area, which has great boxing fans."
Known amateurs from the Southside gym who will be on the card will be Charlie Fagan, Chris Hazimihalis, Marcus Forest and Junior Olympic sensation Juan Salinas, who was a runner-up this year at the National Silver Gloves Tournament. From the West Buckeye Elks, standout lightheavyweight Josh Harris will be in action as local fighters will battle the best amateurs from Akron and Cleveland.
Tickets will cost $15 for reserved seats and $10 for general admission and will be on sale at the Southside Boxing Club on Erie Street (330-501-5713) and Krakusy Hall (330-501-5713).
