YSU wins opener, 3-2
COLUMBIA, Mo. -- Justin Thomas allowed just two hits in seven scoreless innings while striking out nine to lead the YSU baseball team over Missouri 3-2 on Friday at Taylor Field.
The Penguins led 3-0 through eight innings, but Missouri scored two runs in the ninth and had the potential winning run on second base with two outs before Paul Yates forced a groundout to seal the win. Adam Cox and Charles Schultz had two hits apiece for the Penguins, who won their first season opener since 2001.
Thomas got the win while Yates earned the save in one inning of scoreless work. Starter Danny Hill got the loss for the Tigers.
YSU jumped out to an early lead, scoring a run in the first, second and fourth innings. In the first, Brandon Caipen singled, moved to third on a double by Schultz and scored on a wild pitch. Jim Phillips ripped a one-out double in the second and scored on a Kendall Schlabach single. YSU added a run in the fourth when Brian Boone doubled home Justin Banks.
The Penguins and Tigers will play again at 3 p.m. today.
