YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown/Mahoning Valley United Way received a $5,000 grant for initiating the collaboration that resulted in the Afterschool Alliance program at Hayes Middle School.
The Afterschool Alliance was one of 12 winners out of 41 entries for the Community Impact Awards, sponsored by Dominion East Ohio and Inside Business Magazine.
JoAnn Stock, director of campaign and marketing for the United Way, said Afterschool Alliance includes Youngstown City Schools, Mahoning County Department of Job and Family Services, Youngstown Playground Association, Youngstown Area Community Action Council, Mahoning Columbiana Training Association, and Mahoning County commissioners.
The alliance provides on-site academic, recreational and artistic programming for students between 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday. The Jewish Community Center provides on-site program management, and services are provided by many local agencies.
The program features educational and recreational activities as well as a snack and evening meal for the students. Transportation is provided. Activities include homework assistance, aerobics classes, basketball, swimming lessons, theater arts and music, computer training, and leadership development and self-esteem building.
