OHIO'S JUNIOR MISS Elyse Healey of Canfield named first runner-up



The local girl won $4,000 in scholarship money.
MOUNT VERNON -- Elyse Marie Healey, daughter of Chris and JoAnn Healey of Fairview Drive, Canfield, was named first runner-up in the Ohio's Junior Miss Scholarship Pageant. At the event Feb. 20 and 21 in Mount Vernon, she received a $4,000 cash scholarship for the college of her choice.
Miss Healey was among 27 Ohio high-school girls who competed for the title in the areas of scholarship, interview, poise, talent and fitness and more than $20,000 in scholarship money. She earned overall first place in interview and first runner-up in talent and poise.
The 17-year-old classically trained vocalist sang "Think of Me" from "Phantom of the Opera" as her talent presentation.
Miss Healey, who has a 4.0 grade point average, is a senior at Cardinal Mooney High School. She serves as president of the Cardinal Mooney Speech and Debate Team and is a three-time Ohio High School Speech League state qualifier in dramatic interpretation. She is executive officer of the school's Service Club, captain of the Academic Challenge team and member of the National Honor Society, and is listed with Who's Who of America's High School Students. She also is a service volunteer member of the Tod Squad at Tod Children's Hospital in Youngstown.
She plans to attend medical school.
Julia Jones of Ottawa in Putnam County won the pageant and will compete in America's Junior Miss Pageant June 26 in Mobile, Ala. The national pageant will award more than $200,000 in scholarships.
