Having the exclusive video-game rights to a big-name entertainment franchise is not without its drawbacks. For starters, there are the legions of die-hard fans who must be appeased and who will revolt if the game violates the rules of the franchise's virtual world. Yet the game also must be accessible enough to attract non-fans who value superior game play over mythological accuracy.
For a model of a company that's successfully walking this fine line, look no further than LucasArts and its line of "Star Wars" games. The company's Web site, www.lucasarts.com, offers plenty to whet the appetite of even casual fans. You don't have to know what a Jedi mind trick is to be enthralled by all of the site's features.
Although image-intensive, the site is well-organized, easy to navigate and not overly cluttered. Recently released and upcoming games are advertised in a large slide show on the site's index page that catches the eye without being annoying.
Each game has its own section that features game trailers and loads of screen shots. Many of the sections feature additional goodies such as concept art, links to active chat rooms to discuss game play, and free demos. If you already own a LucasArts game, the site offers updates and strategy guides.
