YOUNGSTOWN -- A 28-year-old Youngstown State University student whose mailbox was broken into a week ago learned Tuesday that a tuition reimbursement check for $611 sent to his West Wood Street address earlier this month had been cashed by a man in his 40s at a store downtown. Police have a description of the man, who used a military identification card with the YSU student's name on it, police said.
Will apply for grant
YOUNGSTOWN -- Mahoning County commissioners voted Tuesday to apply for a $498,550 grant from the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Administration. The grant, if approved, will fund the continuation of a drug court at the county juvenile justice center. The two-year grant would go into effect July 1 and expire June 30, 2006.
Web auction results
AUSTINTOWN -- The township is set to collect about $6,700 as a result of its first Web auction, which ended Monday evening. Through the auction on the Web site www.austintownauctions.com, the township sold 22 bicycles; a 1998 Ford Explorer Sport Utility Vehicle for $4,800; and a 1991 Suzuki Katana 750 GX7 sport motorcycle for $1,300.
Man reports car stolen
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 25-year-old Austintown man who borrowed a friend's 2004 Pontiac Grand Am said it was taken from him at gunpoint around 1:45 a.m. today outside a bar on Hylda Avenue, reports show. The victim told police he was approached by two men, one of whom had a gun, and they demanded the car keys. The victim said he was ordered into the rear seat and they dropped him off in the 1100 block of Boston Avenue. The victim said the driver promised to bring the car back after he was done using it. As of this morning, the car had not been recovered.
Harvest for Hunger drive
YOUNGSTOWN -- Second Harvest Foodbank of the Mahoning Valley will kick off the annual monthlong Harvest for Hunger food drive and fund-raiser at 9 a.m. Monday at its new facility, 2805 Salt Springs Road. For each $10 given, the food bank distributes $103 worth of food. Participating stores include Giant Eagle, Sparkle Markets and Tops. For more information, call (330) 792-5522. Grand jury to study case
CAMPBELL -- Mansol N. Young, 29, of Kendis Circle, Youngstown, had his case bound over to a grand jury on charges of aggravated burglary, resisting arrest, possession of drugs and possession of drug paraphernalia after his preliminary hearing Tuesday in municipal court here. Police charged Young after a Feb. 13 episode in which he is alleged to have broken through a window of a Coitsville Road home and caused damage to its interior as he ran through the house frantically trying to get out through locked doors.
Complaint about handgun
AUSTINTOWN -- Police continue their investigation into a complaint filed Tuesday by a township man that another man put a handgun to his friend's head over the weekend in the parking lot of a South Raccoon Road apartment complex. The township man said he was in the parking lot with two friends at about 3:15 a.m. Saturday when they were approached by two other men who told them to shut up. The township man said as he and his friends walked away, he noticed a red dot from a laser sight on his chest. One of the other men then pulled out a handgun and tapped his friend on the head with it, the township man said.
Services for firefighter
LIBERTY -- Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Immaculate Conception Church, Oak Street, Youngstown, for Edward P. Conricote, a township volunteer firefighter who died Monday. Conricote, 55, of Belmar Drive, fell while taking hose off a firetruck at 2740 Barth Ave. and hit his head on the ground. He was a 15-year volunteer. The Mahoning County coroner will determine if Conricote died of his injuries or suffered a heart attack before he fell from the truck. Calling hours will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday at McVean & amp; Hughes Funeral Home, Wick Avenue, Youngstown.
