Two junior guards whose relatives are well known around the Ohio sports scene are leading the boys basketball team at Troy to one of the program's finest seasons.
Shane Carter, the younger brother of Cris and Butch Carter, and Michael Hall, whose brother Brooks played college basketball at Dayton, have helped the Trojans (18-1) earn a No. 5 ranking in Division I of the AP poll.
Cris Carter was a star wide receiver at Ohio State before becoming one of the NFL's top pass catchers.
Butch Carter played basketball at Indiana and later was a player and coach in the NBA. Brooks Hall helped lead Dayton to a pair of NCAA tournament appearances.
Combine Shane Carter and Michael Hall in the backcourt with Ohio State recruit Matt Terwilliger in the frontcourt, and the Trojans have a powerful trio that will be difficult to neutralize in the playoffs.
A perfect example was Troy's 44-43 win Saturday over Centerville. With Terwilliger having trouble fighting through a zone defense, the Trojans made seven 3-pointers and won on Hall's driving layup at the buzzer.
Tough losses
Tiffin Columbian lost two games last week when it was seconds away from winning.
Bellevue beat Columbian 51-49 on freshman Derrick Berberick's basket at the buzzer, and the Tornadoes lost 39-38 to Galion on J.B. Shuck's go-ahead hoop with 2.2 seconds remaining; Arlington's girls lost to Findlay Liberty-Benton 44-43 on freshman Chelsie Kloepfer's rebound and putback at the buzzer.
Playing without leading scorers Amber Bland and Brittany Durkin, Boardman had its 26-game regular-season win streak snapped with a 46-36 loss to North Canton Hoover.
Record-setters
Cincinnati LaSalle boys coach Dan Fleming earned his 200th career win in a 63-46 victory over rival Cincinnati Elder; Beaver Local senior Rachel McCoy had a school-record 41 points in a 74-25 win over Wilson after scoring 33 points in a 65-61 win over Warren Harding; Lisbon David Anderson senior Lucian Smith scored a school-record 47 points and set the school's career scoring mark (1,303 points) in a 90-82 overtime win over Crestview.
