Man accused in rape, assault mistakenly released

AKRON (AP) -- A man accused of raping one man and beating another was mistakenly released from the county jail almost two weeks ago and deputy sheriffs have not been able to find him, officials said.
"Part of the blame, I'm sure, is with us, but part of it also is with the way the court system works," said Summit County Sheriff's Capt. Roger Kline, the jail commander.
Patrick Geiger, 35, of Akron, was allowed to leave the jail Feb. 13 on a signature bond.
The deputies who released Geiger on the signature bond that was set for the initial charge were apparently unaware that he was supposed to be held on a $50,000 bond stemming from his arrest in a second case.
His lawyer, Scott Rilley, doubted that Geiger would show up for a scheduled hearing this morning in Summit County Common Pleas Court.
Kline said jail officials believed the signature bond applied when Geiger was released.
Steve Finical, chief of jail corrections, said the department is looking at policy changes to prevent mistakes like this from happening again.
