INDIANS Shortstop Vizquel arrives to camp early
WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (AP) -- Indians shortstop Omar Vizquel, whose trade to Seattle fell through in the off-season, reported to Cleveland's spring training early Friday along with pitchers and catchers.
The Mariners were concerned about Vizquel's surgically repaired right knee and called off the deal, so the nine-time Gold Glove winner returned to Cleveland.
Vizquel, the Indians' shortstop since 1994, was joined at camp Friday by one other starter -- first baseman/designated hitter Travis Hafner -- and six others looking to impress manager Eric Wedge.
Outfielder Ryan Ludwick and infielder John McDonald, both recovering from knee surgery, and infielder Lou Merloni face battles for roster spots.
Three minor leaguers -- outfielder Grady Sizemore, third baseman Corey Smith and catcher Dusty Wathan -- also were in camp early.
The Indians said right-hander Bobby Howry was in Arizona recovering from right elbow surgery last July and won't report to camp until March.
Howry, who pitched last season for Boston and Triple-A Pawtucket, signed a minor-league deal with the Indians in December.
He's a long shot to make the bullpen as a setup man.
Pitchers and catchers were to have physicals on Saturday and their first workout is scheduled for today. The other position players are scheduled to report Wednesday.
