Foiled robbery
YOUNGSTOWN -- An employee at Little Milly's Oven Fresh Pizza, 2608 South Ave., foiled a robbery attempt just before 9 p.m. Monday when he told a masked gunman he was going to call police, reports show.
The gunman, wearing a red bandanna to cover his face, demanded money and fired one shot in the business when told police would be called. The gunman ran out, accompanied by a second suspect, police said. A .380-caliber casing was found behind the counter.
Crashed into store
BOARDMAN -- A Youngstown woman lost control of her vehicle and crashed into the Rite Aide store in Boardman Plaza on Boardman-Canfield Road Monday afternoon.
Police said Patricia Grace, 47, of West Warren Avenue was waiting for a parking space at about 3:50 p.m. when her car lunged forward into the building. Reports say Grace told officers she did not step on the gas when the car went forward. Grace and an 11-year-old female passenger were taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center's Boardman facility for treatment. The Rite Aide pharmacy drive-up window is open for business. The store, however, is closed for repairs.
Girl faces charges
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 17-year-old Chaney High School girl who struggled with a police officer escorting her to an assistant principal's office Monday afternoon faces charges of assault and resisting arrest.
The Glenwood Avenue girl got in the officer's face with clenched fists and shoved him, reports show. During the struggle, in which she refused to be handcuffed, she and the officer fell over a desk and onto the floor in the assistant principal's office. The girl was escorted to the office to be suspended for five days after a disturbance in a hallway during which she swung elbows and fists at the assistant principal, police said.
Domestic violence charge
STRUTHERS -- Ronald Aaron, 40, of Poland Avenue was released on $5,000 bond after being arraigned in municipal court Monday on a felony domestic violence charge. Aaron surrendered to police earlier Monday.
Police said Aaron knocked his 38-year-old girlfriend to the ground, tried to choke her and knocked four of her teeth loose during an altercation Feb. 11.
The woman told police she lost consciousness after striking her head the second time Aaron knocked her to the ground.
She didn't report the incident to police until Feb. 17 because Aaron threatened to kill her and she feared his reprisals, the report said. Aaron's preliminary hearing is Friday.
He was sentenced to a one-year probation last year on a domestic violence charge. That sentence is applicable until March, the police report states.
Garage fire
YOUNGSTOWN -- Firefighters are still seeking the cause of a garage fire at 1564 Cascade Drive over the weekend that did about $100,000 in damage to five vehicles, including a 1964 Corvette and custom-built motorcycle, the fire department said.
Fire Capt. Alvin Ware said firefighters who were sent to the scene at 10:40 p.m. Saturday found heavy smoke and the fire confined to an area near the Corvette.
Damaging charge
YOUNGSTOWN -- An eighth-grader at Volney Rogers Junior High School who put her fist through a school bus window Monday afternoon faces a charge of criminal damaging, police said.
The school principal told police that she saw the 14-year-old Mahoning Avenue girl, who was in the bus, take her right fist and punch out the window. The girl was given first-aid treatment at the school then driven home by police.
Alliance to meet
CANFIELD -- The Alliance for Watershed Action and Riparian Easements will meet from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. Wednesday in McMahon Hall at the Mill Creek MetroParks Farm.
