BOYS BASKETBALL Cardinal Mooney topples Irish; Uniontown Lake stops Spartans
YOUNGSTOWN -- Sophomore forward Desmond Marrow was 4-of-4 from the free throw line down the stretch as the Mooney High boys basketball team held off visiting Ursuline, 47-43, in a Steel Valley Conference game on Friday.
Marrow finished with 10 points and Jeff Hehr had 15 for the Cardinals (13-5, 2-1), who outscored Ursuline 19-15 in the final quarter. Ron Stoops and David Zidian each added nine points.
Branndon Braxton scored 14 points -- nine in the fourth quarter -- for Ursuline (7-13, 0-4). Derrick Stewart added 12 points, including six in the final period.
Mooney was 15 of 22 from the line. Ursuline was just 6 of 8.
Uniontown Lake 61, Boardman 48
CANTON -- Kacy Sommers scored 15 points and Jeromy Duerr added 11 as Lake (9-10, 4-6) used a 25-10 first quarter lead to take control in a Federal League tournament game at Canton Civic Center.
Jay Davis led Boardman (7-11, 2-6) with 17 points and Chris Wire added 15.
Howland 79, Warren JFK 74
WARREN -- Cody Chappell scored 26 points and Howland outscored Kennedy 24-18 in the fourth quarter to rally for the win.
Ryan Johnson added 16 points and Jeff Proctor had 11 for the Tigers (6-14).
Jimmy Kokrak scored 25 points for the Eagles (8-9). Colin Clemente and John DiFiore each added 19.
