Elderly Waverly, Ohio, woman dies day after car lands in icy water

COLUMBUS (AP) -- An 82-year-old woman has died a day after she was trapped underwater in her car for more than 30 minutes, hospital officials said.
Ruth Ware of Waverly in south central Ohio died about 6:15 p.m. Saturday at Ohio State University Medical Center, administrator Bob Fitzsimmons said Sunday. Her body was sent to the Franklin County coroner for an autopsy.
Rescue workers had freed Ware from her car Friday afternoon after it plunged in the icy water of Paint Creek in Chillicothe, 45 miles south of Columbus.
Ware had been in line for a car wash at a gas station in Chillicothe when she suddenly hit the gas pedal, said Chillicothe police Officer Julie Preston. The car sideswiped a horse trailer, spun out of control and sped back across the street into a parking lot where it hit a trash bin.
The car then sped over an embankment and sheared the top of the tree before landing roof-down in the water 40 feet below.
Witnesses told police that Ware appeared to have lost consciousness just before the crash.
The accident is under investigation.
