INDIANAPOLIS -- Youngstown State thrower Jarrod Davis has been named the Horizon League co-athlete of the week,
Davis broke his own school record in the weight throw with a distance of 54 feet, 4.75 inches, for sixth place at the All-Ohio Championship. He beat his old record by nearly 2 feet and is just 2 feet, 2 inches behind the Horizon League record.
Swimming and diving
INDIANAPOLIS -- Youngstown State junior diver Kalyn Leveto was named the Horizon League women's swimming and diving athlete of the week.
Leveto won the 3-meter diving event with a score of 459.23, in a 61-40 loss to Clarion, and had second-place finish in the 1-meter event with a score of 465.60.
This was the second time this month that Leveto earned the honor. She was also recognized on Feb. 3.
LOCAL
Fitch hoops tickets
AUSTINTOWN -- Fitch High boys and girls basketball tickets are on sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. through Friday in the main office and from 5-8 p.m. today in the gymnasium.
Tickets are $3 for students and $6 for reserve seats.
The Fitch girls play Saturday at 1 p.m. at Alliance, while the boys play at 5 p.m. in the Federal League tournament at the Canton Civic Center.
Boardman falls, 6-4
MENTOR -- Bob Walla scored two goals and Frank DoVidio and Pat Rafeedie had the others, as Boardman lost to Painesville Riverside 6-4 in an ice hockey game.
DoVidio also had an assist, while Jim Pipoly had two. Arman Olgun, Shawn Fulks and Tristan Lysowski also had assists.
In an earlier game. Boardman defeated Butler 8-2. Pipoly scored three goals, while DoVidio, Zack Skook, Lysowski and Walla all had one goal and one assist. Olgun scored a goal and Fulks and Rafeedie had assists. John Yuhaniak stopped 28 shots.
W. Branch to dedicatefield house Friday
BELOIT -- West Branch High will dedicate a new field house Friday between the junior varsity and varsity games of the Warriors' boys basketball contests against Carrollton.
The new facility includes a parquet playing floor, locker rooms, trainer's room and mezzanine for training and fitness.
Former West Branch coaches and athletic directors will take part in the festivities.
Frankovich honored
LOCK HAVEN, Pa. -- Erin Frankovich of Sharon, a junior on the Slippery Rock University women's basketball team from Kennedy Catholic High, was named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division player of the week.
Frankovich, a 6-foot-2 center, averaged 23.4 points and 13 rebounds in The Rock's two victories last week.
Frankovich scored 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds against Edinboro and had 26 points and 16 rebounds against Pitt-Johnstown.

Ohio racingofficial resigns
COLUMBUS -- The chairman of the Ohio State Racing Commission has resigned at the request of Gov. Bob Taft following a report that top racing officials violated state policy by betting on Ohio races.
Luther Heckman submitted a one-line resignation Wednesday, and Taft appointed commission member Scott Borgemenke as his successor.
Earlier this month, Ohio Inspector Tom Charles released a report accusing all the commission's members except Borgemenke, of accepting food, drinks, travel and other improper gifts from racetracks they are charged with overseeing.

Furyk out
LOS ANGELES -- U.S. Open champion Jim Furyk likely will miss the Match Play Championship next week because of torn cartilage in his left wrist that has been bothering him since late last year.
Furyk had to withdraw from the Nissan Open, where he had planned to return after a four-week break to spend time with his newborn son.
Knight drops suit
INDIANAPOLIS -- Bob Knight dropped his breach-of-contract lawsuit against Indiana University almost four years after being fired as its basketball coach.
Knight sued Indiana in 2002, saying it failed to follow proper procedures in dismissing him. He said losing the job cost him $2 million in income from media contracts, basketball camps and endorsements.

U.S. wins 1-0
AMSTERDAM, Netherlands -- Playing at full strength for the first time in nearly two years, the U.S. soccer team lost 1-0 to the Netherlands.
The speedy Dutch forward Arjen Robben took the ball down the side of the field, headed it past Frankie Hejduk as he cut to the center, then beat goalkeeper Kasey Keller in the 56th minute.
