Seven candidates are seeking the Democratic nomination for the Jan. 2 term's four-year seat. Six submitted candidate questionnaires to The Vindicator. An (*) denotes the incumbent.
MELISSA M. LONG
Age: 66
Home: 496 Charles St., Cortland.
Employment: Mayor of Cortland, 2000-03, member of Cortland City Council from 1988 to 2000.
Education: Two years at Kent State University Trumbull Campus studying speech and accounting. Two eight-week seminars at Kent State University on small city and county management.
Family: Widowed. Daughters Patricia Paino and Cathy Talbot, two grandchildren.
Priority: Three priorities: to make the commissioners' staff work efficiently; to institute a high standard of conduct for staff; and to get a grasp on and plan to resolve the county's financial crisis.
REGINALD F. GIANCOLA JR.
Age: 48
Home: 1011 Robbins Ave., Niles.
Employment: Forklift operator, Trinity Industries. Also serving seventh term on Niles City Council.
Education: 1974 graduate, Niles McKinley High School.
Family: Daughter, Brianne, son, Reginald III.
Priority: To recall deputy sheriffs and get them back on patrol in northern townships.
PAUL E. HELTZEL
Age: 58
Home: 511 North Rhodes Ave., Niles.
Employment: Attorney, former special council to Ohio Attorney General, former Trumbull County assistant prosecutor.
Education: Law degree, University of Notre Dame, South Bend, Ind.; MBA, Wharton School of Business, Philadelphia; bachelor's degree, John Carroll University, Cleveland.
Family: Wife, Rosemary, children, Ryan, Michael, Robert, Paul.
Priority: To competently manage the affairs of Trumbull County; to educate the citizens of Trumbull County about what county government does for them; to show that Trumbull County has, for the most part, a very qualified work force.
JOHN D. ROBERTSON
Age: 57
Home: 2142 Atlantic St., Warren.
Employment: Kent State University administrator and counselor, 1983-present; public/community relations, Kent State University, Trumbull Campus, since 2002; adjunct professor.
Education: Doctorate in educational administration, master of education, bachelor of general studies, Kent State University.
Family: Widower, son, Joshua "Alex."
Priority: "Budget projections and planning are high priorities. Of course my overall priority is economic development. The most critically important function for commissioners is to focus regional energies to market our resources to targeted businesses and industries."
DAVID C. COOK
Age: 58
Home: 1083 East Ave. S.E.
Employment: Drawing Social Security.
Education: General Equivalency Diploma, 21/2 years of college.
Family: Wife, Patty, sons Gerin and Edward.
Priority: Bring jobs to Trumbull County.
JOSEPH J. ANGELO JR.*
Age: 49
Home: 2163 Mary Drive N.E., Warren.
Employment: Trumbull County commissioner for last 12 years. Previously served on Warren City Council, owned Joey's Grill in the basement of Warren's Park Hotel and worked at Copperweld Steel.
Education: Bachelor's degree in business from Bowling Green State University, 1976.
Family: Wife, Toni, daughters Gabbriella and Alexa.
Priority: Keep the airport open and support the 910th Air Force Reserve Station.
