Rep warns of mistakesin IRS data on credits
ELLWOOD CITY, Pa. -- State Rep. Frank LaGrotta of Ellwood City, D-10th, is warning taxpayers preparing to file their federal tax returns that information from the Internal Revenue Service via the Internet and call-in services may not be reliable.
LaGrotta said advance child-care credits given last year are not showing up when some people use the IRS Web site and call-in lines. The state representative said the problem came to his attention when two of his employees who received the advance payments last year called or checked the Internet and were told by the automated system that they received no advance payment.
LaGrotta contacted the Internal Revenue Service and informed them of the problem. He said an IRS representative told him he was the first to complain.
"Of course no one has complained," LaGrotta said. "People complain when they are being overtaxed, not undertaxed. But what is going to happen when the Internal Revenue Service catches up with all the people who have mistakenly filed for a larger return than they're entitled to because they were given the wrong information?"
