Treasury to stop issuingnew 'HH' savings bonds
WASHINGTON -- The Treasury Department, citing high administrative costs and relatively low demand, said that later this year it will stop issuing new "HH" savings bonds, which pay interest to their owners semiannually.
New HH savings bonds, which have a 20-year interest-bearing life, won't be offered after Aug. 31, the department said Wednesday. Existing HH bonds will continue to earn interest until they reach maturity, the department said.
The government has been issuing HH savings bonds since 1980. Since late 1982, people could get the HH bonds only by exchanging a certain amount of EE or E savings bonds.
