KEYSTONE CLIPS For road conditions, they've got your number
Pennsylvania State Police don't want people calling their barracks at Mercer to inquire about road and weather conditions. Those lines need to be kept open for emergency calls.
The state police do offer a number of telephone numbers specifically dedicated to road and/or weather conditions that the public can call.
For Pennsylvania interstates, call (888) 783-6783. For the Pennsylvania Turnpike, call (800) 331-3414. For the Erie area, call (814) 452-2000. For the Pittsburgh area, call (412) 936-1212.
For Ohio roadways, call (888) 264-7623. For New York roadways, call (800) 847-8929.
Veterans motorcycle plate
Legislation creating a veterans license plate for motorcycles in Pennsylvania has become law. The measure, sponsored by Sen. Robert Robbins of Greenville, R-50th, authorizes the Department of Transportation to create a plate that any honorably discharged veteran can get for a $20 fee.
Pennsylvania has 11 special veterans plates for automobiles but none for motorcycles, Robbins said. The new law gives veterans an opportunity to proudly display their service to the country, Robbins said.
The value of volunteers
A group of retired schoolteachers in Lawrence County decided to show that there is value in their time. Members of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees presented Lawrence County commissioners with a large mock check for $1,610,886.
Unfortunately, they can't cash it. It signifies the dollar value of the 97,393 hours of volunteer work the school retirees put in over the last year in social service, political and other organizations.
Retiree Carolyn Moody said they multiplied the number of volunteer hours by the rate of minimum wage to come up with the $1.6 million.
