Senators sign free-agent Ray for rest of year
OTTAWA (AP) -- The Ottawa Senators added some toughness to their lineup Friday, signing free-agent forward Rob Ray for the remainder of the season.
Ray, who hasn't played this season, plans to join the Senators on Sunday. Before that happens, he was to make his final appearance as a member of the Sabres' television broadcast crew, where he's worked all season, for Buffalo's home game against Los Angeles.
"It's exciting to get a chance to play again," said Ray, who has been skating regularly on his own and staying in shape. "It's going to be a lot of hard work but I'm looking forward to going."
Ray spent parts of 14 seasons with the Sabres, and is the team's all-time leader in penalty minutes with 3,189. Buffalo traded Ray to Ottawa last March, and he finished with four penalty minutes in five games with the Senators.
Besides his physical presence, Ray provided off-ice leadership for several young Senators skaters during last year's playoffs.
